In the event that the BMS editor does not perform properly, the following table of problems and solutions may be useful. If, after following the steps in this table, you are unable to resolve the problem, please contact your nearest Sony Service Centre or Sony representative.

Symptom

Possible causes and solutions

Editor will not start

·         Ensure that any shortcut you are using is pointing to the correct .exe file

·         Ensure that you have enough hard disc space, and you are using Windows XP/2000/NT or above operating system

·         Check you have enough user access rights to open the program (see your Windows network administrator)

·         If the above steps do not resolve the problem, try re-installing the software

The message ‘invalid path’ is displayed when creating a project

·         Ensure that you are creating a project in a valid location with a unique filename.

·         Check the file paths in the .ini file, to ensure the specified default locations are valid (see section 7.2.4 ‘Setting the file paths’ for more information)

The message ‘Wavedevice – device not available’ is displayed when attempting to play or record audio

·         Ensure that you have a soundcard in your system , and that it is installed and working correctly. (Soundcard performance can be verified by closing the editor and launching a .wav file directly from Windows explorer)

·         Ensure that the .ini files are correctly installed and referenced (see section 7.2 ‘Advanced Editor Setup’ for details)

·         Ensure that the soundcard device number is set correctly in the .ini file (see section 7.2.6 ‘Altering the soundcard outputs used’ for details)

·         If your soundcard is not a duplex card (i.e. it cannot record and playback simultaneously), you will have to stop playback before starting recording. Attempting to do both operations together could result in this message. (see section 7.2.9 ‘Disabling automatic playback during recording’ for more information)

No sound is heard in playback

·         Ensure that the Start and End markers are not in the same place

·         Check the connections to and from your soundcard, and any reference signal you may be using. (Soundcard performance can be verified by closing the editor and launching a .wav file directly from Windows explorer)

·         Check that the master fader is not set to minus infinity (see section 5.1.1 ‘Changing the master output level’ for more information)

·         Ensure that your soundcard supports the sample rate / bit rate you are using (see section 7.1 ‘Audio IO setup’ for details)

·         Ensure that the .ini files are correctly installed and referenced (see section 7.2 ‘Advanced Editor Setup’ for details)

·         Ensure that the correct playback device is selected in the editor .ini file (see section 7.2.6 ‘Altering the soundcard outputs used’ for more information)

Playback is distorted or jerky

·         Check the connections to and from your soundcard, and any reference signal you may be using. (Soundcard performance can be verified by closing the editor and launching a .wav file directly from Windows explorer)

·         Ensure that the .ini files are correctly installed and referenced (see section 7.2 ‘Advanced Editor Setup’ for details)

·         Ensure that your soundcard supports the sample rate / bit rate you are using (see section 7.1 ‘Audio IO setup’ for details)

·         Try adjusting the real-time factor and buffer size (see chapter 7 ‘Configuration and setup’ for details)

Playback is at the wrong speed

·         Ensure varispeed is not enabled (see section 5.1.9 ‘Altering the playback speed’ for more information)

·         Check that any digital reference signal to the soundcard is at the same rate as the output sample rate settings (see section 7.1.1 ‘Changing the input and output sample rate’ for more information)

·         Check that your soundcard supports the output sample rate you are using (see section 7.1.1 ‘Changing the input and output sample rate’ for more information)

Screen re-draws and /or editor performance seems slow

·         Check that your soundcard supports the output sample rate you are using (see section 7.1.1 ‘Changing the input and output sample rate’ for more information)

·         Ensure that your hardware meets the specification outlined in Appendix III – ‘Minimum Hardware Specification’

·         Close any other applications which may be running in the background

·         Ensure that the real time factor and buffer size settings are not set too high (see chapter 7 ‘Configuration and setup’ for details)

No sound is recorded during recording

·         Check the connections to and from your soundcard, and any reference signal you may be using. (Soundcard performance can be verified by closing the editor and recording a .wav file directly from Windows media player)

·         Ensure that your soundcard supports the sample rate / bit rate you are using (see section 7.1 ‘Audio IO setup’ for details)

·         Ensure that the .ini files are correctly installed and referenced (see section 7.2 ‘Advanced Editor Setup’ for details)

·         Ensure that the correct record device is selected in the editor .ini file (see section 7.2.6 ‘Altering the soundcard outputs used’ for more information)

The toolbar appears on two lines, and the track display appears ‘squashed’

·         Ensure you are using a high enough display resolution – the BMS- editors are designed for a minimum display resolution of 1024x768 pixels. At lower resolution, the editor will work normally, but the display is less satisfactory.

The pan function has no effect

·         Ensure that the editor is not in mono mode (see section 7.1.3 ‘Using monaural output mode’  for more information)

The files generated using the ‘mix to file’ function are recorded at a low level

·         The position of the ‘mix to file’ fader will be reflected in the output file level. Ensure that this is not set too low. (See section 6.1.3 ‘Mixing an EDL to a stereo file’ for more information)
